    Reproduction hood or not

My 63 convertible is almost ready for paint. The only problem is I cant decide what to do for a hood. The original one is very thin from being sanded down too much widh a rotary sander (you can see the swirls) and very wavy. The edges are about 1/2 as thick as they should be on an untouched hood. One of the front corners also flexes alot as compared to the other side.

I've already tried to find a good used 63 hood, but can't find one in better shape. A guy in Hemmings this month has a NOS one for $1500 plus shipping.--I cant afford this one right now.

I'm trying to build a Top Flight car. Can anyone recommend a good repro hood--Ecklers says theirs is press moulded like the original..or should I try to repair my hood. Please help.

    Thanks, Boyan

The repros are a little weak in the inner support department. If you cant find a good used hood, the next best thing would be to buy a hood skin from Corvette Image and use your inner structure. That is, if it is good and has no other problems.

Have you considered adding back the material and building up the thickness? I would suggest that a layer of glass mat and resin could build up the thickness and strength. In my opinion, you are better off spending considerable time fixing an original hood (especially if the understructure is good) than going with the repo stuff. If the hood fits your car with out problem it just reinforces the point of fixing it.
