Am getting ready to hang the correct exhaust system on my 56. Is there anything I should be aware of? It always seems that those things appear routine until one gets into them and then it is hard to write you fellows from underneath the car!!! Any advice as to possible pitfalls would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just be patient, and expect to spend some time under the car getting everything fitted, working front to rear, finessing hangers and clamps to get the pipes centered in the four holes in the frame "X" member so you don't get rattles later; snug things up as you go, but don't tighten everything until you're satisfied with fits and clearances. You will also spend some time working with the tailpipes at the joint behind the rear wheels to get clearance where the pipes go through the "tunnels" to the outlet in the bumpers. Make sure the contact fingers in the support attached to the outlet (upper end of the lower bumper chrome) are bent properly to support the pipe firmly so it doesn't rattle at that point. An occasional beer break and patience will be helpful- Top

Re: '56 Exhaust
You may also want to pre-fit the head pipes. Because the 56 did not use a doughnut, the fit has to be fairly accurate. I had to ream the holes for the studs on a recent installation due to the holes being slightly off.- Top

Re: '56 Exhaust
Let me "ditto" Mark's response. I'm in the process of installing the exhaust in my 56. The biggest challenge is the header pipes and getting them centered in the X frame holes. Also, the right side header pipe has some extra bends to clear the starter and draft tube. These extra bends make it a much closer fit near the frame rail. I think patience is the key. Steve- Top

Re: '56 Exhaust
I replaced my '57 exhaust system two years ago. Getting the hangers to support the pipes at the right places will take a little patience. Also, you may have to do a little cutting at the tail pipes to get the right appearance at the ends. The reproduction pipes are probably made a little longer rather than shorter. Make sure you get good secure fits around the mufflers or you will have noisy leaks. As others have said, have patience and take a few breaks.- Top
