I removed the two stainless steel trim strips from the tops of the fender. Two of the threaded fasteners were sheared off. They don't extend through the fender enough to put a washer and nut on them. Has anyone ever removed the fastener piece from the stainless steel piece. Does it slide out after uncrimping the wide end? Is there a special type of "barrel nut" that would go through the fiberglass and attach to the short, threaded fastener?

Joe, I have removed the mounting strip many times,and as you said just uncrimp the large end. I take a 1/4" punch and drive on the small end until the large end comes out enough to grab it with a pair of pliers, then clamp the pliers in a vise and pull on the outer cover and it will slide off. This is the only way to remove dings on the trim. There is a stud gun out there that will spot weld a stud on. A lot of body shops use this system to put pins on to pull with slied hammers and to attach trim pins. I have a friend that is in the elevator business that uses one to attach studs to the rear of elevator panels, and i get him to do mine. John- Top

I just removed badly rusted reinforcing strips from the trim on my 62. After attempting unsucessfully to drive them out from the small end with a punch I figured out a better way. First of all, the punch dented the stainless from the inside using a punch on the small end as it is very difficult to hold the punch off the stainless and drive out a rusted support. I even soaked the support with WD 40 for days. Eventually I figured out that you can clamp a small vise grip on the support studs, as near to the support as possible, and then CAREFULLY tap the vise grips with a small hammer near the stud to slide the support out. You have to wedge the big end up enough to clear the stainless when it reaches that point. My method runs the risk of breaking off the studs but you will be repairing them anyway. Driving the support out from the rear will almost certainly dent the stainless which will then have to be repaired. John's method should work fine with non rusted supports.- Top
