    Motor Mount Bolt Orientation

The '66 Judging Manual states that right hand motor mount through bolts are oriented back to front (for small and big blocks). I recall hearing somewhere that the justification for this is that the fuel pump is in the way of installing the bolt front to back. If you go to the AIM, in the engine section it shows only one side (the left side) and the bolt is pictured front to rear. No note or mention is made of anything different for the other side. Then if you go to the option sections for L36 and L72, it shows the engine assembly but no motor mount, which infers you use the standard engine section mentioned above as the assembly reference. The AIM also shows that fuel pumps were installed at St. Louis, which means the right hand motor mount bolt could easily have been installed front to back if it was done before the pump was mounted. Isn't it highly likely that motor mount bolts can be found in both orientations? Two highly original big block cars I am studying have the right hand bolt front to back.

    Re: Motor Mount Bolt Orientation

    Everett -

All fuel pumps were installed on the engine dress line, before the engine was dropped into the chassis, so the R.H. engine mount bolt on small-blocks was installed rear-to-front. I'm not familiar in detail with the R.H. engine mount bolt direction on big-blocks, but the assembly sequence was the same for all - engine side mount on the engine, frame side mount on the frame, engine drop, through-bolts installed.

Everett, The ORIGINAL Chevrolet FACTORY INSTALLATION of the RH motor mount bolts were from back to front (threaded end toward fuel pump) on ALL BB & SB, as the fuel pump WAS INSTALLED on the engine, before installation in the chassis. Dave
