What year did the spin on oil filters come into use on Chevys? Was the canister exclusive to Corvettes or was it used on all the engines up to a certain time period?

Dave and Steve----
Yes, 1968 was the first year for the spin-on filter across all of the Chevrolet car lines. However, some very early 1968 engines may have received the cannister style filter. I don't think that any 1968 Corvettes did, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Oil canister vs spin on
The spin on filters were introduced in 68 as a rule but the early Novas (64 to 67 )with the V8 had them. The Nova block was a little different in that the pad for the filter was higher on the block. I think the filter was moved up for clutch linkage clearance.

Re: Oil canister vs spin on
The reason I asked is since my non original motor has the canister I should not assume that is from another Corvette? Sounds like just another mid year Chevy motor, however I get varying answers when I research the motor number. My suffix # on the pad is FO206HC and there is no VIN serial number next to it. The car is a '65, 327/365.- Top
