It seems any old car with chromed pot metal has "bubble" or bumpy imperfections that developed over time. Can someone explain the cause, especially since many items are interior components, not exposed to the weather elements. Is there any way to prevent or retard this from occurring? Who is a good vendor to have such items restored?

Re: Chromed Pot Metal Cause/Protection?
Roger,
I'm certainly no metalurgist, but the way it was explained to me is that OEM plating is not extremely high quality and, therefore, gets small microscopic cracks in the surface. Any moisture at all, even humidity, that gets in those cracks attacks the white metal and begins the corrosion process. These corrosion spots eventually push the chrome plating up and form the tell tale bubbles. Any quality chrome plater can de-chrome, clean, and re-plate these pieces - if they are not deteriorated real badly. If you email me, I can recommend an excellent plater in the PA area. Steve- Top
