How difficult is removing a Powerglide from a '65 without removing the engine? For reasons unknown to me, the trans crossmember is welded in place (GM being cheap?). I have read the service manual on this subject and was wondering if any of you have done this without TOO much difficulty. Thanks...

Re: '65 Powerglide removal without engine
A Welded crossmember means the car was built with a manual transmission. The original was apparently swapped for the auto later in it's life.
I did see a similar GM "mistake" while on a factory tour in '76, but it was in the inspection impound area. Written in huge letters on the front and back of a brand new '76 Vet was "WRONG FRAME"!!!
I don't believe you can get the auto out separately with a welded crossmember frame. This is the case for the later 3 speeds and I think it's also true for the powerglide.

Re: '65 Powerglide removal without engine
My 63 has an automatic and I had it removed and rebuilt recently. The cross member in my car is also welded. The work was done by a transmission shop but I asked him how he would get the transmission out. He told me he could disconnect the yoke from the drive shaft and slide the transmission back far enough so it could be tipped down and fit between the cross member and the engine. The passengers side exhaust manifold had to be disconnected and pulled out of the way for clearance. It worked he did not remove the engine.- Top
