    Tire Size

What is today's equivalent tire size for a FR70 tire for a 1972 350 Convertible Corvette?

        Re: Tire Size

I believe a 225 X 70R X 15 is closer. I have used that size on a 70 and 71 and have been very satisfied with look and performance. Someone else can chime in here but I believe the circumference and height of the F70 and 225 X 70 are very close. There should be lots of discussion on this in the archives.

The F70-15, used from '68 to '72, was speced at 775 revs per mile. The 215/70R-15 is also speced at 775 revs per mile, as was the 7.75-15 used from '65 to '67.

The best 215/70R-15 is the Pirelli P4000 Super Touring, which has a "Z" speed rating and is segmented as a performance all-season touring tire.

For a Shark with seven or eight inch wheels I recommend the current crop of police pursuit tires (V-rated all season high performance segment) available in the 225/70R-15 size. At 760 revs per mile they will bring your slightly optimistic speedo/odo closer to true. You could also go with the 235/70R-15 size. They are speced at 742 revs per mile and should clear the fenders, but their slightly larger OD might cause the shoulder to contact the frame at full lock, which is usually not a big deal.

Search the recent archives for "police pursuit tire" threads. They are available from Goodyear, General, and Firestone, and the Firstone PV 41 appears to have a slight edge based on government sponsored performance testing.
