    Heater core bypass

I need to replace the heater core in my 1966 conv. I simply don't have the time to tear into it now. I would like to bypass the heater core to get a little drive time this spring. What is the best way to do this? Does the fluid circulate through the heater core all the time or is it blocked by a valve when the heater knob is not pulled? I know the hoses are 3/4" & 5/8" so a straight pipe to hook them together would not work very well. Thanks, Dave

Water passes through the heater core at all times. You can fabricate a bypass from simple plumbing supplies. For example, standard copper 1/2" water supply lines have a 5/8" outside diameter. It should be fairly simple to locate elbows and adapters to get the 3/4" outside diameter for the other end.

Buy 2 pieces of copper pipe with the correct outside diameter, each 2" long. Buy 4 worm clamps and 1 tube of silicone seal. Fill pipes with silicone seal. Let sit for 24 hours. Cut each line , insert pipe/plug, clamp tight on each end. Done!

            RPO C-48!!!

If you have an AIM just look at RPO C-48. All you need is a pipe plug for the inlet manifold coolant outlet line and a 3/4" heater nipple cap for the tee. The former can be bought at almost any hardware store, and the latter is available from the "Help" line of small parts from Mighty Mite carried by Pep Boys, and other auto parts stores.

It would also be a good idea to buy a couple of extra nipple caps to use on the core nipples to keep dirt out of them.

The auto parts stores used to sell a fitting just for this purpose.

                    Jack,

Plugging just one line as you describe is all that's neccessary. Two is redundant.

If you just want to eliminate the cockpit heat, a plug in one line or an on-off valve is fine, but it the core LEAKS, and you want to postpone removing it for repair or replacement, you have to take it COMPLETELY out of the coolant circuit.
