I'm trying to reassemble my 1958's rear springs - having difficulty assembling the front hanger bracket to the spring eye, with the bushings. The ST-12 is not clear to me (tool J-136 for inserting bushings).
The bushings I have are of length 1+1/2 overall, that's 3" total length to cram into only 2+3/8" of space. I just don't think they can compress that much - their diameter is almost that of the eye bore. I also had bought front bushings from Dr. Rebuild - but, those are a giant 1+3/4 each for 3+1/2" total, clearly would have to be cut down to be used.
Do I need to trim the bushings down? How much compression should they receive?
Also I need to force the large serrated disk end of the pivot pin into the bracket at the same time, and that seems rather difficult. Is there a trick, like freezing the pin? How do I keep from distorting the thin edge of the bracket?
