    Clean Air Tube 65 L79

I am trying to get the clean air tube to bolt up. The tube either needs to be bent quite a bit or I don't have it in the right way. First does it bolt to the same bolt that the lower shielding is held to. Does the line pass behind the shielding then just in front of the starter brace. If anyone has a picture of the way it goes could they email it to me. I've looked in all my books and don't have a picture or good description of it.Things were going great till this little problem. Thanks Mike

    Mike:

Yes, I recall laying on my back and throwing tools around, etc. etc. when I was at this point with my '65 L76!! I do not have a picture for you, but I can say that you must remove the starter front shield and shield upper bracket (the tube routs behind this brace) before installing the air tube. I THINK it bolts to the "V" shield bracket with the existing bolt, and I am sure it does not have a seperate bolt. Do NOT bend it-- first insert the small end into the exhaust manifold, line up the bolt hole, and the upper end should be about 2" above the top of the manifold, slightly to the rear of its center.

        Still Having Trouble

The routing with the V-shield and starter brace seem to get in the way. The way the bends in the tube are it looks like it actually would go through the V shield where it is notched out but it dosen't fit good that way. I would have to some bending. I want to be sure thats the way it goes before I start changing the shape of the tube. Any help with this would be great. Thanks Mike

            Mike:

Be patient with this - it is a real bear. I just crawled under mine to check. Starting from the bottom, after it comes out of the manifold, the tube goes rearward and through the slot in the starter heat shield. It is routed in front of the "V" shield, so removal of the shield is not necessary. From there it goes up and gets bolted to the block using the existing rear spark plug heat shield bolt. It then continues up, and routs behind the rear spark plug heat shield. It terminates approx. 1 1/2" above the top or the exhaust manifold, in the vicinity of the rear rocker cover bolt.

Again, I did not bend the tube, as it is a very tight and critical fit. You will have to remove the starter shield and the rear spark plug shield at a minimum. If removal of the starter helps, then do that also. Do not remove the "V" shield because the tube goes on top of it.

            Good luck.
