Yes, this is an L88 Cam in a L78. I confirmed with previous owner this week. Are you serious, this car shouldn't idle below 1200-1500 rpm?

The L-88 cam was designed for racing and maximum power in the upper rev range, not for street driving. The overlap and duration are WAY over what a street engine should be set up with to have any reasonable low end torque and idle speed/quality, and it won't make good power anywhere without headers and an open exhaust. That's why it has so much overlap.

If you can get it to idle at 1500, that's probably about as good as it gets. You'll enjoy the car a lot more if you install the SHP mechanical lifter cam that it originally cam with.

I adjusted the idle. Started her up today and she idled at 1,500 for about 10 minutes then started climbing 100 RPMs at a time. By the time the temperature hit 180 degrees, it leveled off at 2,000 RPMs! I thought it was suppose to go down! No sign of lumping or hesitation. Tried to get it back down to 1,500 and it wouldn't take. She either idled at 500 in a lumpy state almost stalling out or she would sit fine at 1,500 - 2,000. At 1,500 to 2,000, it is awfully difficult to take off from 1st gear. I think my clutch is gone

The original carburetor is not properly calibrated for the L-88 cam especially at idle and off idle. Just put the OEM cam back in it and get everything set up to factory spec and you should have a decent car.

Trying to drive a car on the street with a L-88 cam is just plain foolish.
