    '70 M20 Linkage Lock-up

I just had a first time experience where I couldn't get my shifter out of reverse and across to get to first,or any other fwd gear.
There was even a moment where the transmission was fighting between reverse and forward...an internal breakup ready to happen if clutch was released.
I got below and manually worked linkage and surely it freed everything up.
Now,friends of mine have experienced identical to this on other C3's.
My linkage is all original, never tampered with..and 60K mile car.
    Any ideas or remedies.
P.S...my shifter interlock cable not the problem.
    Thx
    Jim

Same thing on my LT-1. Had to rebuild or replace all the washers, spring clips etc. on all the shift arms. This got rid of the "slop" in the Linkage. Then grease everything.

        Jim,

Same thing happened to my 67. Cleaning and oiling the linkages, as well as removing the slop solved it. Weird thig was, it would work when I had the trans out of the car but not in. Never did find the true problem.

Although "slop" in the shifter unit is the primary cause, the problem is generally triggered by some other problem, such as faulty neutral gate alignment or failure of the weld that holds the shifter husing together. Check those.
