Power steering hose leaking

Good morning to all of you. On the way home from our judging school, my 72 LT1 developed a leak at the PS pump. I am hoping it is in the hoses and not the pump itself. I will be under the car today to do the final diagnosis but in the meantime, I am looking for advice on who has the best/most correct PS hose kits? I am driving the car in two weeks on a trip from Pittsburgh to Asheville so I have sufficient time to order the parts and fix what is broken.

GM sells the most correct power steering hoses. The only problem is that they're VERY expensive and no kits are available; just individual hoses. Here are the 4 used for your application:

pump to valve pressure hose---GM #3826277----GM list=$64.67

control valve to cylinder (extend)---GM #3826275---GM list=$60.88

control valve to cylinder (retract)---GM #3826276---GM list= $60.88

control valve to pump (return)-------GM #3826278-----GM list= $16.48

The aftermarket ones really aren't too far off the original configuration with the exception of the crimping. The markings, of course, may differ, but those can be easily removed with lacquer thinner.

If you figure out which hose you need, someone out there might have originals for you to, ah, well, let me know.

Well, the interesting thing is that I couldn't get the PS system to leak when the car is jacked up and my friend goes lock to lock on the steering wheel, with the engine running. However, the control valve is very wet, the PS pump is completely dry, and the slave cylinder appears to have oversprayed PS fluid oil on it. I pulled all four hoses and one of the control valve hoses was chafed but not leaking. The high pressure hose has a small crack in the rubber at the control valve end. All four will be replaced and I MAY be rebuilding the control valve today, just because. I have heard from others that these PS control valves are prone to leak. Since mine was very wet and I couldn't duplicate the problem or see any visible leak from any of the hoses, this seems to be the prudent thing.

Good luck rebuilding that control valve. That is not a job I ever want to do, what with the centering and all necessary once you touch it. Let us know how it goes. I just ended up buying a rebuilt one and saving the headache. I kept my original, though.

You might somehow have the hoses tested or pressure checked once you replace them so that you can decide which ones you might want to reinstall in a year or so.
