Gents, I am having a really tough time trying to reindex my distributor properly. Since the engine was tuned over while the distributor was out I,ve followed the shop manual procedure exactly and end up with about 35 advance. I know its probably off by a "tooth" but which way? I tried moving it one tooth but must have gone the wrong way causing a back fire and scaring my neighbors to death. Can anyone give me some advice on this one? BTW 327/340hp. Thanks!

Re: distributor install
Think of the way you rotate the base of the distributor to increase or reduce timing. To achieve the same effect by moving the distributor shaft/rotor assembly, it must be moved in to opposite direction. In other words, to reduce the initial timing, the rotor should be rotated in a counterclockwise direction (looking down from the top)- Top

Re: distributor install
Remove the distributor and check to see that the dimple in the drive gear is pointing the same direction as the rotor tip. Then set #1 at 10 degrees BTC, install the dist. and rotate it until the points just start to open. That should get you within a few degrees of spec and allow the engine to start. Then do the final adjustment and lock it down.
With the drive gear properly installed there is only ONE installed postion that will allow you to achieve the proper timing before the vacuum can interferes with the manifold or shielding. If the drive gear is 180 degrees out, you can't get the distributor rotated enough to achieve the correct timing because its half a tooth off.
