    1964 frame rust

I have an unrestored 1964 conv. (Top Flight in 1999) with surface rust throughout the frame. Can I do anything to protect and preserve the frame (with the body on) while still maintaining correctness for judging? Can I wash it with a frim brisle brush with soap and water and then apply POR-15 by hand with a brush or pad? Can I use gloss clear or gloss black POR-15 and not get a judging deduction? Is there a matte black product out there that is better and acceptable for judging? Should I use the POR-15 metal cleaner and Metal-Ready prep. products first? I know this stuff is permanent so I want to get some expert resto. and judging advice first. Thanks.

I would not recommend the use of POR-15, at all. It will produce far too "thick" of a finish appearance. I would recommend wire brushing with a drill fitted with a wire wheel. Then, I'd apply Rust-Oleum semi gloss black. Finally, if you wish, you could apply the asphaltic paint, as original, which you can obtain from Quanta Products. It's not very durable and it will not inhibit rust formation. However, the Rust-Oleum will serve that function and the asphaltic "over-coat" will be just for show.

I used this method with the wire brush on the drill then put rustolem. Mine just had a little rust on the rear near the gas tank but i used this on the whole frame to clean it good. You might also want to stick an air gun in the frame and blow out the dirt from inside the frame. I did it hand i got rat poison, chunks of shreded cloth and alot of dirt than came out. Eric

I have used POR-15 on two projects, not vettes. POR-15 spreads very thin. Rustoleum is a joke compared to POR-15. The only time POR-15 is a problem is on new metal, where it will peel off. It really works at stopping rust.

I used on a set of rusty rims on my Blazer. Then I apllied a top-coat of enamel over that. It has been 5 years and the rims are rust free.

For me there is no substitute. If you apply the factory finish over it, you will have the best of both worlds.

Tough choice, with differing opinions. Certainly POR-15 semi-gloss black seems a heck of a lot stronger than Rustoleum but may be too tough a project on frame of completely intact car. I guess it can't hurt to go the less permanent route first with a wire wheel on a drill and then hand brush and/or roll Rustoleum. I'm going to be doing the job on my back with the car on jack stands. I'd appreciate any more thoughts out there.

POR-15 likes a rusty base. It needs some porosity to cling to. If you use rustoleum first, you would need to remove it prior to using POR-15. You have the perfect base right now.

Dana-How would you prep for POR-15? Would you bother with a wire wheel/brush 1st to get the top coat of rust off (still leaving mildly rusty surface)? Would you degrease and then paint? Have you used the semi-gloss black POR-15? Thanks.

Sorry for the delay. A wire wheel or brush is a good idea. You want to remove loose material. You must also degrease. I use there metal ready product and it worked fine. I have used the regulay and semi-gloss blacks. I always paint over them afterwards, as they are suseptable to UV. As I previously sated, I have never done a corvette. I usually paint or undercoat over it. For a vette, I would use a factory type paint as a top-coat to maintain originality.
