    gas tank cleaning

My '64 Roadster has been sitting for a number of years and a flashlight view of the tank reveals a carmel colored mixture and "stalagmite growths in the tank. What can I use to clean this gunk?
    Thanks!

This might sound silly but an old trick was to remove it from the car. Remove any old gas and the sending unit. Put about 2 or 3 gallon size containers of sharp gravel and some hot soapy water in the tank. Blank off the openings and roll the tank around in the yard. The sharp rocks act like a tumbler and removes the rust.
You can't beat the cost if it works,

I've had success with the gas tank restore kit from eastwood. I takes about 4 hrs to do and between the kit and other chemicals, cost about $50.

I have never had much luck in cleaning tanks. You can purchase a new perfect reproduction for about $200.00. You wont have to worry about rust or any other junk getting in your fuel line, plus the peace of mind of driving with a perfect tank, good luck.

Not actually viewing your tank I would suggest that you could also remove the fuel filler neck if it is like my 68 and 70. This would give you enough room if your arms are long enough to really clean the tank on the inside by hand. This would also give you a good indication of what the tank metal is like on the bottom inside of the tank. Then for a couple hundred dollars you could just buy a new tank and not have to mess with something that will have to be replaced anyway.
