    Steering box lube?

Im rebuilding the Steering box on my 67' L79(no power steering)and I have read three suggestions, re-filling it. Use 1)grease only, 2)Mixing grease and 85-145 gear oil together and using that or 3)just use a heavy gear oil?? I put about 500 to 1000 miles on a year and hate to see that leaky oil soaked steering box!! I keep the car on a lift over my daily driver so I see the underside alot!! Would appreciate some guidence!! Thanks !! Mike Arteaga #34566

Use grease only. Since the discontinuation of GM #1052084, I prefer and recommend GM #12377985. This is also the GM-approved replacement for the 1052084 which was the grease originally used in all 63-82 Corvette steering boxes.

Thanks,Joe! I found the grease at Zip. How many tubes does it take and should I pack as much in there as I can? Thanks again. Mike

I think that one tube will be sufficient, but you might want to get 2 in order to be sure. You can use any excess as a chassis lube since this particular grease is a multi-purpose. It's good for every chassis grease application except wheel bearings. In fact, it can be used for wheel bearings, too, but I prefer other greases for that application. You can fill the steering box with grease. This is a low speed application and excess grease will not hurt anything. Also, it will ensure that everything that needs to be greased, is greased.

You don't need to go to Zip for this grease. Many GM dealers should have this in stock. It's not difficult to find, at all.
