Thanks for the advice on the distributor drive gear! As you advised , I had reinstalled it 180 degrees out...turned it around and she fired right up. Even set the balancer at 10 BTDC on #1 and timing was within one degree. BTW no mention of the dimple on the drive gear in the shop manual...guess it just takes experience. Thanks again

Re: Duke
It's a shame that there is no mention of correct drive gear indexing, and this has caused all kinds of havoc over the years. I always read and followed the manual whenever working on my car. The first time I pull the dist. back in the mid sixties I got the drive gear on backwards and couldn't get the timing right.
I can't remember if someone clued me in or if I finally saw the dimple and figured it out myself, but it's an easy trap to fall into.
As Clem said, the drive gear has and odd number of teeth, so if you install it 180 out it will be off half a tooth and you can't rotate the dist enough to get the initial timing right and the cap terminals will be out of index with the rotor, which weakens the spark energy at the plugs.
There are probably a good number of drive gears that are 180 out, today.
