    Midyear Headroom?

I am close to having the cash to buy a corvette. I have had my heart set on a midyear coupe since high school. I am currently 32 years old, 6'2" and 200 lbs.

I took the advice of some friends and went to a local corvette dealership in N.H. There I sat in a '64 coupe. I was heartbroken as my head was hitting the left side of the roof where it curves down towards the door. I subsequently sat in a 2000 C5 and I fit perfect.

    Is this a common problem?

I would hate to, but could I modify the seat brackets to lower them?

Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

        I'm 6'3", 300lbs.

I "fit" in my 67 coupe. You do what ya gotta if you want one bad enough. Once I'm in its cosey. The year before last I drove it to Sun Valley and back to the CA Bay Area. Everything was great, JUST HOT!!!

            Dana:

It could have been the way the seat was adjusted. On my 64 Convertible, there are adjustment screws in the bottom of the backrest of the seat. I am also 6'2" and 200#. I have these screws turned all the way in for maximum seat rake. I have no problems fitting in my car. In my opinion, the mid year Corvettes are probably the roomiest Corvettes made with the exception of the current, C5 generation cars.

If the seats still do not seem right for you with the backrest adjustments turned in, there are other tricks you can use to gain more room. I have seen people put 2" blocks of steel under the forward seat track attachment points to gain additional seat rake.

To a certain extent, there will be some compromise when dealing with any car of this vintage in terms of luxury and comfort. The technology just was not as well developed as today.

If you still think you won't be comfortable in a mid year coupe, your final solution to the headroom issue would be to purchase a mid year convertible rather than a coupe that has a removable hardtop or was optioned as a hardtop only car if you don't care about top down driving.

AHHHH ! The advantages of having lived life at 5'7" 165 lbs. I even fit C1"s although at age 58 the ride is a little bone jaring on the ole back bone.

Dana, cheer up!!!! I went through the same thing! 6'4", 200+. We also have a friend who is 6'9" 300+ who gets into a 66 coupe, this is not a good fit! On my side, I drive a 67 Roadster, no head room problem with the Top Up, seat is back all the way etc. I have sat is some others that seemed to have less room, as others have noted, maybe there is a seat mounting option, I do not know on this one. I also have a new C5, which when looking we where concerned about the head room! The C5 is as you would expect, a dream and very comfortable! Take your time, make sure, but do not give up! I am 6'4" 220lbs, and I have a 66 roadster. Even with the top up, my head does not hit the top. It has been a while since I sat in a coupe, but perhaps the coupe roof line curves in more than the convertable. Certainly with the top down, I have plenty of room... Joe

Dana - The problem is your age not your height or weight. The BIG guys have spoke along with some others. Everyone who has responded is 6'2" or better well and over the weight specification as am I and I have a '67 coupe and it fits me or I fit it very well. My wife who is 5'3" has to look thru the steering wheel but that's her problem. Go for it. you'll be gald you did. Have fun. Pete
