Has anyone taken a Y-50 apart to have it rechromed? Specifically, does the pot metal part that holds the glass screw out of the chromed "arm"? If so, how do you screw it out without damaging the thin pot metal piece?

Re: 1960 Guide Y-50 Mirror
Joe, 1st - break out the glass, 2nd - use small screwdriver on ball head (back of mirror) and drive out very carefully by hitting the screwdriver with a hammer. It is a press fit with splines on the shaft. Might have to soak it in Kroll oil, WD-40 or solvent before it will come out. With the glass out you can see the pivot retainer is rivet to a backing plate the same size as the glass. The backing plate can be carefully removed using a feeler gauge or thin putty knife. The back and base pillar can then be sent off to be chromed. Recommend Paul's Chrome in PA as they re-etch the stamping on the back of the mirror. Normally, Chrome shops grind off the plating and the stamping almost disappears. Hope this helps as couldn't respond to your e-mail until I got home tonight. Gary....- Top

Re: 1960 Guide Y-50 Mirror
I am not familiar with the 1960 mirrors, but, for restoration on my 67 mirror I received several posts here about a year ago (should be in the archives) that to save the dated original glass, you can soak the mirror overnight in acetone or lacquer thinner, and it will release the bonding agent without damage, and you can repair the housing, then rebond the glass when complete. It sounds great, but I haven't tried it yet...Craig- Top
