    Dave - a pneumatic muffler cutter with the 3" dia by 1/16" cutting wheel works very well for this...I use mine to buzz through hardened steel as well as tempered all the time. I have also found my plasma cutter works wonders on this type of cut without overheating the adjacent area. The oxy-acet route would be a bad choice for a spring as it causes too much localized heating and temper removal for a spring....Craig
