    58 oil pick up problems

My friend gave me an early chevy oil pan with the drain plug in the rear center of the bottom. Since this is correct for my 58 I decided to swap it with my non stock pan. Which of course I got rid of too early! The problem Im having is that when I place the oil pick up level with the pan rails this places the pick up 1 inch above the bottom of the pan. Lowering it to give about 3/8 clearance places the pick up on a large angle. I have ordered several pickups from the parts dealer but they all seem too short. How high is the pick up supposed to be off the bottom? Does anybody know the stock pan depth and the proper pick up part number. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

The correct oil pump pick-up screen for your 1958 application is GM #3764113. And, you're in luck as this screen is still available from GM for a current list of $13.20. I doubt that many dealers will have it in stock, though. An auto parts store may be able to cross-reference from this number.

Usually, the oil pump pick-up screens are positioned so that the pick-up is very close to the bottom of the pan.

If the "incorrect" pan that you were using was any of the 63+ style Chevrolet small block pans, the pick-up used with those pans will not be functional for an original 57-62 style pan.

Thanks for the help on the pick up. Would you happen to know the distance from the bottom of the rear sump to the pan rail. Mine is about 8 inches. Is this correct?

It sounds about right to me. I can confirm it later, though.
