    open element air filter

I have an LT-1 open element. On the inside of the lid are some service instructions and the AC logo. The inside is also discolored from 32 years of backfires. I am wanting to clean up the sludge film and it actually cleans pretty easily. I am afraid of removing the service instructions. How is the label applied at the factory. It appears stamped in that it is raised but lookes like it could easily be rubbed off.

Any pointers on what to clean with so that the labeling is left intact.

That "label" is a silk screen. I used carb cleaner (so long ago I forgot the brand) on mine with no damage, but you might try whatever you use carefully with minimum rubbing. Do a small area first to be sure it is OK before going at it big time.

Start with DAWN dishwashing soap. It has a grease cutting agent and is still rather mild. Mix with warm H2O and use a wash rag. You can always upgrade to organic solvents later if this solution proves ineffective.

Jacks advice is the best, but like Terry I used carb cleaner with no problems.

I used rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab on mine and it cleaned up nicely. You are talking about the chrome lid cover to the aircleaner, not the paper element itself right? Because there are directions on the original air filter elements too *I think* (going on memory, don't actually have one to look at). ~Juliet
