    Lifting Motor

I need to change the motor mounts on my '76. The engine is in the car but all accessories (carb, water pump, A/C, PS, etc) are removed. What is the best way to lift the engine? Can I place a floor jack with a wood block under the oil pan? Can I lift it by the harmonic balancer?? Please help!

Strap a chain using 3/8 bolts into the water pump mounting holes and lift via the chain with a cherry picker. Easy, quick and simple. Be carefull if you jack against the oil pan, it's only sheet metal and will dent.

If all you are doing is changing out the engine mounts, I would try a floor jack, with an appropriate sized piece of plywood between the floor jack and oil pan, and lift the engine the couple of inches necessary to get the engine mounts off.

            Re: Lifting Motor

Rather than taking a chance on damaging the now-discontinued original oil pans, I made a simple "U"-shaped saddle years ago with a 2"x 6" for the base and 1"x 6" for the sides, slightly taller than the depth of the pan, with the inside width about 1/4" wider than the pan. The top edge of the side pieces pick up on the pan bolts, and I jack under the 2"x 6" base piece to raise the engine. C1 water pump changes make it necessary to hold up the engine, and this simple saddle makes it quick and easy with no damage to the pan. Link below shows this incredibly complex device

Thanks for the help. I am going to try the saddle. It seems like just the tool I need. Thanks again.
