Differential Carrier endplay

I am replacing the diffrential cover on my 72 and figure since I already had it open I might as well inspect it. I have not taken it apart yet. My ring gear looks to be in good condition, but my side yoke endplay is .032 in. for both sides. Is this a little excessive?

Assuming you have a positration axle, the yoke end play will increase as the clutch plates wear. You should remove the yokes and carefully check the groves and C-clips for wear. That's the other source of increased yoke end play.

With a new positraction case and unworn yokes at C-clips the endplay should be less than ten thou.

Assuming your yokes and clips are okay, the wear is in the posi clutch pack, but it's probably not excessive.

It would have been best to check the posi preload per the CSM before you removed the carrier. That's the real test of the positractions health.

If you don't drive the car a lot or hard, and there were no clunks and clanks before you removed the carrier, it's probably servicable, but if you want to make it perfect, now is the time to overhaul it.
