I realize this is not a swapmeet so I apologize if this is considered off topic but I figured it might be valid to float the idea here for the board's tremendous value in exposure to like minded folks and then move to private e-mail.
Reading the post about the "never down" spare made me think of something I've been trying to do for 25 years. I know I am not alone in my love of new tires (and batteries). This may stem from our formative years when we ran tires 'til the air was showing or were always worrying if the beater (Corvettes tucked safely away) would start, but without therapy I'm not sure.
Anyway, in the past, I have made full sets from others' original spares. It took years and was very time consuming. I no longer have that kind of time but with the Net, I don't think that amount of time is still required.
I have several "never down" spares from cars I've owned and I imagine there a folks out there with a lot more than I have. Additionally, I have a couple of dozen (some complete sets) NOS, non-DOT tires I have bought over the years. If anyone is interetsed in compiling a database of who has what and where it resides, I am willing to be the one to get it started.
I see a few ways it can work. We could set a price for a set of 5 (or 4 if that's how folks want it) tires and once a set is complete the 5 (or 4) folks who contributed to the set can decide (agreement, draw straws, joint custody, whatever) who gets the actual tires and the others get paid for their tire. The price can be fixed (by our tire co-op) or set by the individuals involved in trying to put together a particular set. They could even be free with the "winner" taking all. Whatever consenting adults want...
I realize this "tire computer dating" sounds a little (a lot?) nuts but I'd rather see 20 or 25 cars with absolutely correct original tires than 100 cars with an invisible NOS spare in the well. I don't think it's that crazy, the tires don't have to move until a full set is made, no one has to spend a dime, people just have to commit to giving up their tire once a set is acheived.
It won't even be that much work for me. I figure to start by printing out each e-mail and putting them in a folder by year and note quantities on the jacket. Unless the response is staggering, I doubt I'll ever need a searchable database.
Who knows where it could all lead? Donors may begin to visit their ex-tire at the Nationals and all 5 guys may start having reunions every few years. Top Flight award winners might thank their contributors. You may begin to hear things like, "I couldn't have done it without Joe's left front but Jack's right rear really put me over the top."
If this is well recieved, I may share with you my idea for salvaging original paint from 1/2 or 1/4 survivor cars... ;)
