    Fender Skirt Removal?

    Hello All --

What's the best way to remove the fender skirts from the front wheel wells without destroying the fenders? The suspension's removed, engine out and just about everything else from the engine compartment's been removed so I've got plenty of room to work with. Thanks!

Sorry but I have to ask, Why? Its unusual to have a good body and a bad skirt. I did, however, see one walking down the street yesterday.

        Bad skirt

Wayne, I dont think the issue is whether or not you can have a good body with a bad skirt, but more probable that we are just too busy admiring the body to notice the skirt.

With that said, my suggestion for Dave is to leave the inner fender alone and invest in paint. As long as you've got a great bod you can get away with a lot of other offenses!

        Just my chauvenist 2 cents....

I too would like some insight into Dave's original question. When I first got my '66 almost 30 years ago, the right front fender and skirt were damaged. I repaired the fender but did nothing with the skirt. I now have the body off the frame and it would seem like a good idea to rectify that little omission. Any help would be appreciated.

It can be done, but it aint goina be fun. You will have to carefully cut away at the innerfender leaving the bonding strip on the fender panels. Then grind away the BS from the underside. If you try to separate the bonds, some of it may break loose from the bonded areas, but if it is well bonded you chance ripping chunks out or causing damage to the front side. Take it easy and try to chip away at it.

Thanks for all of the input. The reason for my inquiry is that the skirts had apparently been victims of sloppy repair work at some point in time and are really ugly. I figured since the engine compartment's empty, it'd be the easiest time to be lazy and rather than repair, just replace them.

But...based on your feedback, I think I'll get real friendly with the old orbital sander and fiberglass repair. Thanks!
