    Re: C1 Heater Ground

    Bob,

I stick to my original statement, grounding occurs through the heat control cable to the console. I know the console is mounted on fiberglass but it has a separate ground wire from the wiring harness. Check your wiring diagram and you'll see a ground wire (18 ga. black) between the radio and heater. This also serves as ground for the clock. This wire is probably redundant if the car has a radio because grounding to the console would occur through the radio support strap and a ground wire running from the radio chassis to the right valve cover, but in case of a radio delete, it would be essential. The heater core case is plastic and could not serve to ground through the hood latch cable.

        Ted (& all):

You are also correct. Many years ago (prior to internet) a few of us old-timers (by phone) tried to solve the question of heater motor grounding and came to the same conclusion; grounding was provided through cable back to console and console had a separate ground as shown on 58-62 AIMs in Section 12, page 11.00 or 12.00, View B.

This other grounding method (separate wire from heater housing to body "kick" support) is one I don't remember anyone mentioning. I'd be curious to know if all these early cars with heater have this separate wire?

            John -

I'm pretty sure the '56-'57 had the separate ground wire (as mine does), as there is no grounded console on pre-'58 cars, and everything the control cables attach to is either fiberglass or cardboard.
