Stripped 69 with two body questions

I have stripped the black Imron paint from my car using Klean strip for fiberglass. When I first purchased the car in 1984 I had an Eckler's front clip put on the car so the gelcoat on this is still good. My questions concern from the firewall back, all of these body panels are original and I just finished sanding off the remains of the old grey primer this afternoon. I now have reached another black layer in most areas, but in some the black is gone and the fibers in the glass are showing. Is this black layer another primer coat or is it some kind of sealer? I have a copy of Don Sherman's book which mentions a technique of brushing on resin in these bare areas instead of using Gelcoat, is it better to use this in spot repairs or should I remove the black layer and do all the original panels with brushed on resin?
    Thanks

69`s, except for the doors on some late cars, were black fiberglass. I suspect this is what you are seeing. In the areas that have more resin the glass will be black and may show some fiber, but in those areas especially near the seams most of the surface resin is gone and you see a lot of heavy fiber. The best ,though hardest way of prepping the surface, would be to gel-coat all of the old glass.
