I have a few 68-69 style emergency brake handles.... black plastic with lousy chrome trim. Have seen the ads for chrome plating on plastic. Anybody have any info on success/failure/feasibility of attempting to re-chrome the plastic trim on the brake handle, leaving the diamond grain untouched? GM obviously did it when the handles were made. Thank you. Chuck

Re: Chrome Plating Plastic Pieces
Chuck, this is a good question. I have checked with the two "big money" restorer shops and both said they did not rechrome the brake handles and did not have a source. For future restorations, finding a source would seem valuable to the hobby. I do not believe NCRS deducts for a non chromed handle even if the VIN. of the car is such that it is impossible for the car to have come with an all black handle.- Top

Re: Chrome Plating Plastic Pieces
My good friend, Dennis Moore and I, between us, have about 6 handles, all the "correct" 68-69 style with the diamond grain going all the way to the top...i.e., no "band". We fooled around trying chrome "tape" with poor results. Dennis also went to a hobby shop and bought some of the chrome "transfer" stuff that model builders use. This also produced poor results. I've seen ads for Mr. G's plastic chrome in Hemmings for years, but have never tried having any parts done. Chuck1963 Corvette Conv. 327/360 NCRS Top Flight

Re: Chrome Plating Plastic Pieces
Chuck,
I emailed Mr. G's to see if they would do '67 dash knobs. They said, "No way." I would assume that would pertain to e-brake handles as well. Too bad, because there are a lot of them out there that would benefit from a plastic chroming process.

Re: Chrome Plating Plastic Pieces
Rick,
Just below the black plastic handle there is a pin bushing which holds the spring mechanism down. Once this is removed the plastic handle should slide down far enough to unscrew the square plastic brake release button. The the handle section will slide up and off. Assembly is reverse, but be sure you see hold the spring comes out so you put it back together correctly. Good luck.. I guess Chuck will want to send out our handles.- Top
