What would be the most likely cause of a backfire through the drivers side exhaust when the engine is reved in neutral? Thanks.

Afterfire, not backfire
It's call "afterfire" when you hear the pop in the exhaust. Backfire is when it hiccups back through the carburetor. Afterfire could be caused by a lean mixture or a leaky exhaust valve. Try richening the idle mixture a bit, and a leakdown or compression check should reveal if you have a leaking valve.
