    AIR Pump

I'm looking for some numbers info about the correct A.I.R. pump for my '68 327/350. The original bracket with the fuel filter clip and bolt are still on the engine. I've been to Carlisle where vendors had them dumped in a box and judging from the appearance of the vendor himself I would not want to trust him. Any helpful info about the air system would be appreciated. I also found my old A.I.R. pump that came off my 1969 Z/28 back when I bought the car in 1971 and was wondering if this will be acceptable?

    Re: AIR Pump

There are numbers/dates on various components of the AIR system that identify configuration and build time. These are described in the NCRS Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide book for your car which is available on this web site (STORE pull down). I'd get the book and read up. Using components that are 'similar' to factory correct/original configuration will net you partial credit to the extent of the discernable differences along the axis of FINISH, DATE, INSTALLATION, CONFIGURATION and COMPLETENESS with the available originality points divided equally (20%) on each axis.

Thanks for the info. I ordered the tech book for my '68. It sounds like I'd be much better off finding someone with a 69 Z/28 thats looking for an original A.I.R. pump for his DZ-302 and use the money to get the correct one for mine.

            Re: AIR Pump

Watch out for those casting numbers on the AIR pumps. The general used the "149" pump from 68-early 70's on many different vehicles and they all have the same casting number but they are machined differently for different cars. Example: the 72 Buick uses the same casting but has the threaded boss where the Chevy has the through hole and vice-versa. The pumps are basicaly the same otherwise. The 68 pump has the same "149" casting with an extra round valve mounted on top but is otherwise the same as the 69 up "149" pumps. There were a few SHP Vettes that used the 68 style "extra valve" pumps in 69. Hope this is helpful in some way.

            -Mark.

The "149" casting Mark is refering to is the casting number for back cover of the pump ONLY. It was used on many other GM AIR pumps that are incorrect for your application so dont use that as your only method od ID.

                    Steve-----

The 1968 Corvette AIR pump was, generally, unique to 1968 models, but not just Corvettes. This pump is of the 68-79 style, but it has a relief valve on the top (as oriented installed on the engine) of the aluminum body of the pump and, with only a few exceptions, was used for the 68 model year only. The exceptions were 1969 L-88/ZL-1 and, POSSIBLY, the 1969 Camaro Z-28 application. Except for the earlier style 66-67 pumps, no other application used the pumps with the integral relief valve.

The 1968 Corvette diverter valve installation was also unique, although I think that it may have been used on some other 1968 Chevrolet applications. This installation involved an AIR valve, a fabricated steel bracket, and a short hose with a 90 degree bend between valve and pump. Later pump/diverter valve assemblies used a cast aluminum elbow and no hose or bracket.

You can use a 69-71, or even a 72-79 style pump/diverter valve assembly on a 1968 Corvette. Functionally, it will work just fine. However, its configuration is not correct.

Steve my original owner 68 327/380 still has the orignal air pump and is still functional. Any numbers off of it you need?

I would like the numbers from the back of the pump. Also the color of the fins behind the pully ( black /white) Any help would be appreciated.
