    Mid Year Glove Box Door

Has anyone had experience with the rebuild kit for the glove box door. I have disassembled and cleaned all the components, and filed all the "rivet" surfaces so that the back and front sections will mate cleanly. The question is, how does one drill and tap the holes for the new screws (the ones that replace the "rivets") without going through to the front face of the door. The thickness of the potmetal at the mount points is less than 1/4", and the screws have about 1/8" of threads. My first thought is to VERY CAREFULLY drill the holes with a "marked" drill bit, and try to cut a few threads with a self tapping screw. Am I on the right track----does anyone have any experience here.
    Thanks for any insight.

Joe, You may have ground the rivet too far if you ground it flush. You really only need to get the head of the rivet barely ground off (which is really just an extrusion of the front of the door which is bent over) and then drilled and tapped to accept those screw-in deals. You notice how short those suckers are? If you have no room to drill farther than you may need to get a new door front.

Yes! You must take CARE not to drill too deep. You can either mark the drill with a visual 'stop' line or get a specialty attaching depth stop OR use a drill press with a built-in adjustable depth stop. Brandon also gives you GOOD skinney on NOT to remove too much rivet head material (instructions packed with GB door rebuild kit 'gloss' over this aspect of the job). If you've taken off too much material, its time to think about an epoxy fill that can be drilled & tapped when it hardens (like JB Weld) to regain some of the surface material you've removed....

            Jack:

Yes, I realize that it is of critical concern not to remove too much material from the original "rivet" (actually part of the door face that is peened over to grab the backing plate). I only filed off enough (approx. 1/32") to get a clean mating surface for the backing plate, which now only leaves approx. 1/4" or less material to drill/tap.

I know the watch word here is CAUTION, but I am just looking for some "words of wisdom" that have been gained thru experience.

Lacking that, I will just use a self tapping screw to cut in a few threads for the new screws. A conventional tap will not work, as the blind holes are much too shallow.

                    Joe,

If need be, you could start to tap with a standard tap and after it has started switch to a bottoming tap. They're usefull for tapping to th bottom of a blind hole or for shallow depths.
