Shut 'er down, NOW!
The screaching noise is a telltale for critical parts being worn out (either tach cable is dry or tach internal mechanical parts are worn/mis-aligned). You can diagnose by pulling the cable, giving it fresh lube and/or substituting a known good cable and making a SHORT test run. If noise reoccurs, STOP! The problem is most likely to be in the tach unit itself....
There were 100's of independent AC/United Delco dealers coast to coast and many still exist (try the Yellow Pages in your area) who have the parts and calibration equipment to repair these speedo and tach units. What they won't do is 'pretty up' the gauge face cosmetics like those who advertize services in NCRS Driveline....
So, if it's just a 'make it work' situation, you can probably still find a local repair shop to assist. But, if it's a factory concours full cosmetic overhaul, you're better off packing the instrument off to a restoration service provider.- Top
