I tried to bleed my brakes this afternoon on my '66 327/300 with power brakes. Yesterday I re-installed my re-built power brake booster and re-built master cylinder. I am re-doing the engine compartment, so they have been off the car for about 2/3 months. I bench bled the m/c. I cannot get any fluid out of the rear on either side of the car. Got a little from both fronts. The pedal is still very soft and squeaks now when it is pushed down. I disconneted the lines and re-bleed the m/c on the car. I opened all the rear bleeders and tried to have it gravity feed, but after an hour I did not get a drop. I even pumped the brake with all rear bleeders opened and nothing.I cannot start the car because I am still finishing the valve covers etc. Does the car need run to build vacumn in the booster?? What am I doing wrong or what should I do to correct my problem. Any help as usual is greatly appreciated.By the way all calipers are new s/s within about a year.

Re: Brake Bleeding..What am I doing Wrong..HELP
Don, while I am certain that the brake "experts" will jump in on this, I also had difficulty, after I had replaced a power brake MC, in getting good bleed on the brakes. The moral of the story was that I had to re-bleed the MC on the car several times to get good flow to the brakes. I think the fact that the rear brakes are so far from the MC may affect the amount of time and the number of attempts at pumping the brake pedal, to get good brakes. It DID take me a while even though I am not a newbie at bleeding brakes.

You cant just pump the brakes with the fitting open. That will just suck air up the lines. Get some help. Fill the MC. Have someone push the pedal while you open the bleeder. Shut the bleeder before you release the pedal. Keep doing this untill the fluid flows. After you get it flowing it will bleed by gravity. Never let the reservoir get down while bleeding.- Top

Re: Brake Bleeding..What am I doing Wrong..HELP
Gary, I bled the m/c on the car. Maybe I am doing it wrong. Don't you take a tube fron the side of the m/c and insert it in the top of the m/c as long as it is under the fluid ? or do you keep it out and insert it when the pedal is being left up ? Some detailed guidence please .
Wayne, I have bled brakes before, but we started with the pass. rear and open and closed and pushed and released for probably 10 minutes and nothing.
This is what is so confusing to me.I have never had this problem of getting nothing .
Thank you both for your thoughts, any additional?- Top

Ok, you need to check and see if the MC is releasing enough to uncover the pick up hole. If the plunger from the booster or the rod to the booster is not correct the piston will not come back far enough to uncover the hole. Thus no fluid.- Top

Wayne: If you could describe your last post a little better, ole dumb me may be able to understand it better since I am a Saturday mechanic! When I had hooked up the temporary lines ( where the brake lines connect)to bleed back into the m/c and pushed the brake pedal, there was a very nice flow. Thanks again- Top

Make sure you have the required 1/16"-1/4" free travel at the top of pedal travel; the clevis where the rod from the back of the booster attaches to the pedal arm is adjustable (with a jam nut to lock it) in order to get this degree of "looseness". If there is no "free travel", the M/C piston won't travel rearward enough to uncover the compensating port in the M/C bore to let fluid into the chamber (and will result in partial brake application with the engine running without your foot on the pedal).- Top
