    73 Fan Shroud Numbers

Found fan shroud part number 331869 in my 73 w/350. It appears to have been cut to fit. Know it will have to be replaced. One in car has an extension with no numbers. I would appreciate anyone advising if extension will fit correct shroud. Also any idea what the one in the car was supposed to fit?

    My experience.....

Fan shroud extentions were FREQUENTLY removed and discarded by prior owners/mechanics. Today, both the shrouds and matching extentions are being reproduced.... In three out of three cases where an NOS fan shroud was obtained and 'correct' repro extention was ordered, mating geometry was TERRIBLE! The repro extentions had to be shaved, attaching holes 'wallowed' out, Etc. Maybe the repro extentions do fit/work with repro shrouds....

I wouldn't touch an answer to your question with a 10-foot pole based on my personal experience. I'd advise you to remove the extention and go test/try it on the target shroud you're considering. Who knows, you might get lucky!

The 331869 is correct for your 73 . You will need to find a used part as I have not seen this number as a repo. Your shroud extension will not have a number on it but I took some measurements on one . It is 19 1/2 inches dia. 2 3/4 inches thick for 33 1/2 inches on the outside and 4 1/4 inches for 27 1/2 inches, with a cutout in the bottom 9 1/2 X 3 inches. The cut out at the lower radiator hose of the lip on the side of the shroud is rough but that is the way GM did it.

The fan shroud extension for your application was GM #331870. This piece is still available from GM for about $45, GM list.

Thanks to all. I will clean up my present shroud and start looking for one off of an existing 73. I was concerned that the rough cut on the shroud indicated someone had hacked another year shroud to fit. Really appreciate the efforts of all who support the tech discussions. You all are a great help. Regards, Bob
