Left rear squeak in '65 convertible

I have a 1965 convertible that I have started to hear squeaking coming from the left rear. It only occurs under accelleration. If I let off of the gas or push
in the clutch, the squeaking stops. It also seems to go away over 30-35 MPH. Occasionally, I am also hearing a clunk/clink (pick your favorite sound)from that area too when starting to let out the clutch. It drives fine and I have not noticed any wandering, turning problems, loss of control, etc. Thanks for any suggestions on what to check first.

I'd say that it's likely one of 2 problems: either a failing u-joint or a rear wheel bearing problem. The most likely, given the symptoms which you've described, is a u-joint. If your u-joints have 50,000 or more miles on them (or, actually, even less than this in MANY cases), I can virtually guarantee you that you won't be wasting any money by replacing them. By the time that 1/2 shaft u-joints start "sounding off", they are usually VERY bad.
