I am about to embark on the project of replacing my windshield. I have had a windshield off of a C1 many years back to replace a dash pad, so I can get that far. Any tricks to replacing the glass, gasket etc. The shop manual talks about using sealers that are not commonly used on windshields today. Should silicon be substituted? Also, I am replacing the side posts with some swap meet parts that are in much better shape than the ones presently on the car. No idea what year they are from, and they are certainly not from the same car since they came from different sources. Am I apt to have any problems fitting the new pieces? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: 61 Windshield replacement
The posts all have the same part numbers so I believe they should fit. You can use silicon sealer but be prepared to work fast, as I remember the rubber seal took quite a bit of stretching to fit over the glass. You will need a helper for re-assembly and a rubber mallet to help convince the parts back together! Good luck , hope this helps.- Top

Re: 61 Windshield replacement
Ed. I advise against using silicone caulk with a rubber gasket. It has been my experience that silicone reacts with rubber and eventually deteriorates the gasket. A better sealer, in my opinion, would be butyl caulk. It is available at your local glass shop.- Top
