    Doin' the Archives Boogie

I checked through the archives to see what comments might be posted about kickpanels (before I posted my questions in the thread below). It's very cumbersome to check one of nine archives at a time. You know the drill, click on Archive X, type in "kickpanel," click on the results, hit back-page twice, click on Archive X-1, and repeat. Seems like most people would be like me and want to check all the archives at once. Am I missing how to do this, or is there a reason for splitting the archives?

    Mike,

There are a couple of reasons that the archives are broken down into manageable groups. There are now over 100,000 messages archived. If you have done a search of any of the archives now you know that it takes a while for the server just to search the 10,000 messages in that archive. While it is searching the archives, over here on the Tech Board everyone has to wait just a little longer for each task to complete. That really goes for the entire ncrs.org site.

The database that indexes all of the messages also begins to really choke when it tries to index over about 10,000 messages. This causes it to lock up, or contain errors.

I keep an eye out for a better way to handle the archives, but as yet have not found it.

        John,

I hate to mention it based on the troubles of yore, but would it help to place the archives on a different server?

        Likely too much expense?

I've wished for a single database as well, as well as an "advanced" search engine so that we can be much more specific with our requests and then hopefully make the searches easier.

            Possibly a help

Instead of "clicking" on a page you want to call up. Press and hold "SHIFT" then "click" on the page. This will open a new box/page. When you want to go back to the first page just close the last box/page and you are back to the original search page.

                Pull up entire thread

John recently also changed the archive search so that when you do find a topic and click on it - it brings up the entire thread, instead of having to poke through 10s of messages one at a time. That feature alone IMHO has made it a TON more useful!

John, how about selling the archives on CD-Rom? Then we can search to our hearts content on our own PCs. ~Juliet

                        Juliet,

I wish I could compile the archives on a CD that you could use. The search engine is run by a Perl Script. There are some windows emulators out that will run it on your PC, but you would first have to install the emulator, and get it to work, then run the script. Or you could install UNIX on your PC

Um, Not being UNIX based maybe I'm in left field (like painting late shark nose emblems) ... but isn't there a way to export the archives into ASCII? Maybe threaded, one file per thread. Then a simple text search engine can be used (like what's on the Restorer CDs). I've got a bunch of stuff I've saved manually in threaded format which I search using the standard windows search to find the keeper posts regularly. ~Juliet
