    Belts & Pulleys 65/L79

I have a problem getting the belt on, I believe its possible one of my pulleys is wrong. The belt for the alt. is to short. It should be the correct belt it was bought from Quantas and it checks out, I also have a new GM 7/16 wide 54 1/2in. long belt which should be a 1/2 longer then the Quantas belt. They are both about the same distance short. The lower pulley has a GM number on it and I checked it out and it is correct. The alt. pulley has a number on it and is 3889387 its 3 1/2in. across. Is this correct. Should the water pump pulley have a GM number on it. I can't find a number anywhere on it. Its the same size as the lower pulley, aprox. 7 1/2 in. Any help to point me in the right direction would be great, this has been a long day. Thanks Mike

I think that your alternator pulley is incorrect. I can't find any Corvette application for GM #3889387 and, if that's the correct number, it's for some 66 or later application. Your car should have pulley GM #3871242 if it's a non p/s car or pulley GM #3829387 if it's p/s-equipped. Both of these pullies are 3-5/8" OD. The latter pulley is still available from GM for a current list price of $37.70; the 3871242 is discontinued but available in reproduction.

Your water pump pulley should be GM #3770245. This is a 2 groove pulley of 7-1/8" diameter. It has a characteristic cone-shaped "snout" section. The part number may or may not be stamped on the face of the fan clutch mounting surface. If so, installed on the car, the fan clutch hub will obscure the stamped number. This pulley is still available from GM.

One other thing: if I recall correctly, your application may have used an idler pulley. I'm fairly sure that the L-84 and L-76 did, but I'm not certain for the L-79 at the moment.

Sorry Joe a typing error my pulley was GM # 3829387, do you know is that pully identical in size to GM# 3871242, the only difference would be the part number stamped on it. Thanks Mike

As far as I know, the pullies are the same diameter. However, I believe that the groove offset on the 2 pullies is different.
