    C2 convertible carpet installation

A quality uphostery shop quoted me a labor-only price of $175 to install a complete carpet set in my '65 convertible. Is the video by Al Knoch on the subject worth buying for a DIY project? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Installing carpet in a 65 should be a fairly simple task for the DIY'er. I did my 66 convertible about four years ago and it took the better part of a day to do. Not at all technically difficult, just time consuming to do it right. The seats came out; center console came out; then the old carpet and padding came out. I should have removed the steering wheel too but I didn't.

Once everything was out, I used a 2" putty knife to scrape the majority of the old glue and pad out. Once that was done I washed the entire floor board and then dried it. I did mine in winter but I have read other posts where folks have said that if you will do this during warmer weather you can allow the sun to warm up your carpet which should make installation easy. If you choose not to do this yourself, I would think that the quoted price is reasonable based on my one and only attempt at carpet replacment. Make sure that they glue the pad to the floor and the carpet to the pad.

I'm with Gary on this one - Follow his steps and it will work out. I used 3M spray adhesive and worked well. I did mine in the summer and laid the carpet in the sun,
it makes it much easier to work with. Test fit it around the gas pedal and where the carpet meets the kick panels before gluing and it will be worth your effort. Another fringe benefit of doing it yourself is finding all the old coins under the seats and carpet.

Try this web site, it describes the installation of carpeting in a 74, I would imagine the procedure is about the same for your car

One suggestion. When you use the 3M carpet adhesive, you only get one chance to glue each piece down and if you miss the alignment you have a real problem. Place each carpet section in with no glue and get it exactly where you want it. Then peel back half, apply the adhesive, glue it down then do the other half.

                            One last thing...

Just a last word of advice:

Take a close look at the Molan Adam's books on cutting the carpet to fit over the seat rail mounting bolts. Carpet cutouts fit over end mounting bolts on the front aspect of the seats as I recall. And the rear kick panels fit under (? - it's been a few years) the carpet at the end of the door sill plate.

Good luck, it isn't very hard, just requires patience.
