1961 Temperature Sender Wire Loom

I plan on replacing the wire loom on my temperature sender wire. How do I go about installing the replacement loom? Does the temperature connector (that attaches to the switch) seperate from the wire so I can slide the loom on? I'm not sure how to do this.

There is no way that you'll be able to remove the connector from the wire without damaging it to the point that you won't be able to re-install it. Here's how I do it: push the existing wire loom as far back as you can or carefully slit it and remove it. Next, cut the wire at a point about 6" to 12" from the connector end. Then, slip on a new piece of wire loom of the same length as the original and push it as far up the wire as possible. Next, slip on a 2" piece of shrink tubing on the wire (available at Radio Shack). Strip both ends of the wire off where you cut it and solder the two ends together. Then, move the shrink tubing over the repaired section and shrink it with match heat to fit tightly. Lastly, just pull the wire loom up to the connector and you're done.

Alternatively, you can just snip off the connector, remove the old and re-install the new loom and replace the connector with a new one IF you can obtain one identical to the old (oe one otherwise satisfactory to you). The above procedure is only if you wish to retain the original connector.
