    Body mount and shims

    Hello all,
I ordered a body mount cushion and shim kit for a '61 which came with 8 rubber cushions, 10 cardboard cushions and 10 metal shims all in there own separate packages. After studying the '61 AIM (page A69) I still can't tell what goes where. There are no part numbers on the cushions so they can't be matched with the part numbers as shown on page 69. Are the cardboard cushions even supposed to be used or just the rubber ones? Do you place a metal shim on each cushion BEFORE the body drop or wait until you see that it's needed AFTER the drop? Sure need some advice on this. one.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Mike,
I think your best bet is to put all the shims on and then remove if not needed. It's easier to remove one than put one in. I've not seen any cars that don't have any shims. The rubber pads go on top the frame as marked in the AIM, not at the mounting bolts. The ten paper/fiber shims go on the frame at the mounting points and the metal shim goes on top that. When everything is done no metal is touching metal. You may need more than ten metal shims as several cars I've seen have two or three on a couple of the mounts. The best way to determine is the door, trunk, and hood gaps. They should be close to even all the way around. Not rocket science but effective.

        Thanks Larry,
Now it makes sense. Guess if I would have looked at the rubber cushions closer I would have seen that there were no holes in them...dah.
        Thanks again,
        Mike
