    '63 Brake assembly (again)

A while back, I asked if anyone had either a detailed diagram or pictures of the brake assembly for both front and back wheels. Shane Grinnell responded with some good pictures (thanks again Shane). The reason for this new post is that a picture of a completely assembled brake unit is not enough. The picture does not indicate how a few of the parts are connected. e.g., there is a crossbar that goes below the bow-tie but I do not know which direction the crossbar goes on. In addition, I think there is a spring that goes on this crossbar.

Anyway, I now need to ask my original question again. Does anyone have pictures or know of a manual that shows details of the assembly of the front and rear brakes. The manuals I have do not show this much detail.

    Thanks,

    Gary

    Gary:

Just about any picture of any domestic drum brake setup will do-- they are almost all the same, front and rear (except for the extra emergency brake actuation lever in the rear).
The "crossbar" you refer to, is a spacer for the brake shoes, and does have a spring on one end. This spring goes on the rear (primary) shoe side, with the tab on the outside of the shoe. This spacer installs into the slots cut into the shoes, just below the wheel cylinders, and above the axle shafts. The orientation of this spacer is "bowed", or convex side away from the backing plate. On the rear, there is a double wide slot cut into one end-- this wide slot goes to the emergency brake lever side.
    Hope this helps.
