    63 numbers

my friend just bought a gorgeous frame off restored 63 roadster, he bought it because he loved it and it was mechanically perfect and correct, he didn't buy it because it had matching numbers, the car does in fact have vin number that matches engine number, trans number, rear end and frame number, the question we have is that the vin tag on the frame under the glove box is spot welded in place and has two small grind marks under the tag, is the welded vin tag correct, possiblly correct, or a sign of counterfeit stamping?

Yes the vin tag was spot welded to the cross member below the glove box. On my car that member was sanded before welding the tag on.

For 1963, the "z" brace was lightly ground for cleanup, and the VIN tag was spot welded in place. The rosette rivets came into use later.

David and I are both original owners of our SWCs. Your VIN tag description sounds like the real McCoy. The surface was given a quick grind to remove the paint so the spot weld would take.
