    paint colors

    Hi.

I live in Australia and am restoring a 1970 corvette coup as original as possible. I would like to match the paint color "Donnybrooke Green" as close to original as possible. However I have no sample to go by to tint the new paint. The car has been resprayed red and the original color is really hard to determine.

Does anyone have or know of where I can get a sample colour or the paint code for the color.

I intend to use a good quality two pack paint and get professionals to do the job for me.

Where did the name donnybrooke come from anyway, is it a place in America?

Donneybrooke is the name of a racetrack, though I forget where it is, or was, as I expect it is closed now. Maybe someone can refresh our memories. In that era Corvette colors were named after American road race tracks.

Your car was originally painted with acrylic lacquer, and best result would be obtained if you use the original paint code mixed in lacquer if you are looking for a truly authentic looking paint job.

All the major U.S. paint manufacturers - PPG, Dupont, and R-M still supply
lacquer, but I don't know if they distribute down under. All you need to do is find a supplier and give them the paint code from your body data plate.

Duke - I think there was a racetrack in Brainard MN called Donneybrooke Raceway. I remember going to a forumla V race there in the 70's (back when I lived in Rochester MN instead of Tucson AZ). I also recall there was a color with Elkhart in the name, which I beliver was in Wisconsin. I may be wrong on all of this, but it memory serves I think I a right....Craig

                Duh!!!

Of course! I kept thinking Brainerd, but the track name is Donneybrook. I guess I'm not firing on all eight tonight. Back in about '72 or '73 I went there to see a Can-Am race. I was a young Air Force Captain stationed at Grand Forks AFB, ND. I made the trip with a Lt. and his wife, and we camped at the track. My date was a Colonel's daugther home for the summer from college. Great weekend!

Your local automotive paint supplier should be able to get paint-chip sheets (pages out of the catalogs the paint manufacturers gave to the retailers back in 1969) for 1970 Chevrolet cars. They certainly can get formulas from the major paint manufacturers. DuPont was the original paint supplier so their paint chip sheets would be preferable. If your retailer cannot obtain them, you might get lucky watching eBay auctions on the internet for the original DuPont sheets.

In the 1960s and early '70s, many of GM's paint colors were named for various racetracks around the world. e. g. Donnybrooke and Elkhart Greens, as Terry mentioned, also Mulsanee Blue, Monaco Orange, Mosport Green, Laguna Blue, Mille Miglia Red, Daytona Blue, etc.
