    A riveting question!

Recently I pulled the carpet out of my '63 roadster. I found the seatbelt hangers under the carpet, with the original carpet still under them. After a lot of liquid wrench and a large breaker bar, I removed three of the bolts. Unfortunately, the one on the outside driver's side, had to be drilled.

In my drilling fury I also drilled out the rivets to the nut plate -ooops. I was thinking it would be easier to retap the nutplate in my vice on the workbench. And so it was.

However I now need to replace the nutplate up under the floor pan. I have no idea what to do. It seems as if rivets would require removing the body from the frame in order to get a counter mass behind the rivet. There is very little room between the frame rail and the nutplate.

    Any ideas?

This is not a car that will be restored to "original" any time soon. Could I use pop-rivets? bolts? etc???

    Thanks,
    Dwayne

Ok, I'm game. But first let run something by you guys...

My first guess was that they used rivets to merely hold the plate in place so that you could easily thread the bolt into it. But after thinking about it, why 6 rivets (or was it eight?). Surely they could have used 2, if it was to just hold the plate up. In the event of a collision, does having all the rivets help structurally in some way? Would glue perform the same function and as well? If so, what type of glue would work best?

        Thanks for you help,
        Dwayne

Don't know why they used so many rivits.Later cars used two.Use any two part epoxy that bonds metal and fiberglass.
