Early 54's still had some gelcoat, as many of the panels were still hand lay-ups, which required a gelcoat layer on the mold surface before laying-up and rolling-out the mat and resin; the last panel to be converted from hand lay-up to press-molded (which did not use gelcoat) was the floor pan, about 2/3 of the way through the '54 model year.
