I am currently repairing (not restoring) a 74 corvette I purchased last fall. It had been in storage for the last twenty years, and I would like to go for a ride this summer after I repair what needs to be fixed. Upon inspection the rear differential cover was disintigrated where the rear bolts attach. I am going to replace the cover and would like a few suggestions. First, can you recommend a cover to purchase. Heavy duty or not? Second, what did the factory put on the gasket if anything, the old one was stuck on very tight! And last, the car has 30,000 original miles and the fluid was like new. It didn't smell and was translucent and very clean. Is this normal? The posi-traction works ok on the jack stands. Thank you for your time, corky.

Re: rear end cover
Corky----
There are two important factors to observe when purchasing a cover. First, you want one that is drilled and tapped for 9/16" rear spring retainer bolts, as original. The current GM replacement, GM #464909, uses 7/16 bolts and requires changing the spring retainer plate and adding spacers. I don't recommend using that one. Most aftermarket replacement covers use the original type 9/16" bolts.
Second, I do not recommend the so-called HD covers. Most of these do not have the "relieved", "scalloped" area at the back of the cover like the original cover. Yes, this does make the cover stronger, but it also makes the spare tire carrier difficult or impossible to properly install in the car. Make sure that you ask the supplier if the cover will allow the spare tire carrier to fit properly. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
